Una comunidad ind\u00edgena de la Amazonia peruana ayud\u00f3 este mes a capturar in fraganti a mineros ilegales de oro gracias a una aplicaci\u00f3n para tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes desarrollada por la Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK), lo que condujo a la espectacular destrucci\u00f3n de equipos de miner\u00eda ilegal.<\/p>\r\n

La comunidad Masenawa de la regi\u00f3n peruana de Madre de Dios lleva trabajando con RFUK y la organizaci\u00f3n ind\u00edgena local Federaci\u00f3n Nativa del R\u00edo Madre de Dios y Afluentes<\/em> (FENAMAD)<\/em> desde 2017 para supervisar las actividades ilegales utilizando el sistema de supervisi\u00f3n en tiempo real a medida de RFUK, ForestLink<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Los mineros fueron sorprendidos a pocos kil\u00f3metros de la reserva comunal de Amarakaeri. Hab\u00edan montado un campamento provisional mientras buscaban oro con maquinaria pesada. Esto llam\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n de la comunidad local de Masenawa, que se encontraba en una misi\u00f3n de vigilancia en tiempo real (RTM) apoyada por la RFUK.<\/p>\r\n

Utilizando un tel\u00e9fono inteligente con conexi\u00f3n por sat\u00e9lite, los monitores enviaron r\u00e1pidamente pruebas de las actividades ilegales a FENAMAD, que inform\u00f3 inmediatamente a las autoridades. La polic\u00eda medioambiental del gobierno intervino entonces dr\u00e1sticamente destruyendo las m\u00e1quinas, veh\u00edculos y otros equipos de los mineros en una serie de explosiones controladas. Cinco sospechosos fueron detenidos a ra\u00edz de la intervenci\u00f3n, con cargos pendientes.<\/p>\r\n

La presidenta de la comunidad de Masenawa, Carmen Irey Cameno, es una firme opositora a la miner\u00eda de oro. Desde que denunci\u00f3 las recientes actividades ilegales, varios miembros de la comunidad han sido amenazados y dos miembros de la propia familia de Cameno han sido golpeados como represalia.<\/p>\r\n

\"Es alarmante ver a los defensores del medio ambiente amenazados e intimidados de esta manera\"<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

dijo el Coordinador de RFUK para Per\u00fa y la Amazonia Andina, Aldo Soto.<\/p>\r\n

\"Al mismo tiempo, la determinaci\u00f3n de Carmen y su gente para proteger su entorno es realmente inspiradora. Lo que demuestra esta intervenci\u00f3n es el poder de aprovechar la tecnolog\u00eda para el bien social y ponerla en manos de la poblaci\u00f3n local, que est\u00e1 en primera l\u00ednea de la lucha contra la deforestaci\u00f3n.\"<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Madre de Dios est\u00e1 considerada la \"capital de la biodiversidad\" de Per\u00fa y alberga varias reservas naturales, adem\u00e1s del famoso Parque Nacional del Manu. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, la extracci\u00f3n ilegal de oro se ha convertido en uno de los principales motores de la deforestaci\u00f3n en la regi\u00f3n, con una producci\u00f3n ilegal de oro estimada en 15.000 millones de d\u00f3lares solo entre 2003 y 2014.<\/p>\r\n
