Kinshasa, 28 octobre 2021<\/strong>\u00a0- D'\u00e9minents scientifiques africains et internationaux se joignent aujourd'hui \u00e0 l'appel de plus en plus pressant lanc\u00e9 au gouvernement de la R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo (RDC) pour qu'il annule son projet de lever une interdiction de 20 ans sur les nouvelles concessions d'exploitation foresti\u00e8re industrielle. Plus de 25 scientifiques ont envoy\u00e9 un\u00a0lettre<\/a>\u00a0aux donateurs internationaux, les avertissant des cons\u00e9quences sociales et environnementales d'une lev\u00e9e imminente du moratoire.<\/p>\r\n

Les \u00e9cologistes craignent que l'accord sur les for\u00eats de la RDC, d'un montant de $1bn, qui doit \u00eatre annonc\u00e9 lors de la COP26, soit\u00a0La Commission va probablement donner son feu vert \u00e0 une nouvelle exploitation foresti\u00e8re massive<\/a>\u00a0de la deuxi\u00e8me plus grande for\u00eat tropicale du monde.<\/p>\r\n

\"La protection des for\u00eats intactes est cruciale pour le r\u00e9tablissement d'un environnement sain.\u00a0une plan\u00e8te qui se r\u00e9chauffe de plus en plus<\/a>. Il est important que nous ne consid\u00e9rions pas nos for\u00eats et leur existence future comme acquises\", a d\u00e9clar\u00e9\u00a0Corneille Ewango Ekokinya<\/a>Professeur \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 de Kisangani. \"Il serait bon que le gouvernement prolonge le moratoire sur les nouvelles exploitations foresti\u00e8res industrielles et trouve d'autres moyens de d\u00e9velopper l'\u00e9conomie que l'abattage de la for\u00eat tropicale\", a-t-il ajout\u00e9.<\/p>\r\n

Le projet de lev\u00e9e de l'interdiction a \u00e9t\u00e9 annonc\u00e9 par la ministre de l'environnement de la RDC, Eve Bazaiba, et par le ministre de l'agriculture de la RDC.\u00a0adopt\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0par le Conseil des ministres le 9 juillet, parmi\u00a0n\u00e9gociations sur la protection des for\u00eats<\/a>\u00a0avec des donateurs internationaux, dont la Norv\u00e8ge, le Royaume-Uni, l'Allemagne et la France.<\/p>\r\n

Les scientifiques mettent en garde contre des \"impacts environnementaux, sociaux et climatiques catastrophiques\", qui pourraient \"entra\u00eener l'ouverture \u00e0 l'exploitation industrielle de dizaines de millions d'hectares de for\u00eats tropicales humides actuellement vierges\". Ils affirment que l'exploitation foresti\u00e8re commerciale - \"m\u00eame si ce n'est que pour des esp\u00e8ces de bois s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es\" - \"n'est pas une bonne chose\".\u00a0conduit souvent<\/a>\u00a0\u00e0 la disparition compl\u00e8te de la for\u00eat.<\/p>\r\n

Le bassin du Congo pourrait \u00eatre la derni\u00e8re des grandes for\u00eats tropicales \u00e0 jouer encore le r\u00f4le de puits de carbone, \u00e0 la suite d'\u00e9tudes r\u00e9centes indiquant que l'Amazonie est devenue un puits de carbone.\u00a0\u00e9metteur net de carbone<\/a>. L'expansion de l'exploitation foresti\u00e8re en RDC pourrait \u00e9galement menacer la Cuvette Centrale.\u00a0tourbi\u00e8res<\/a>L'Union europ\u00e9enne est un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me qui stocke 30,6 milliards de tonnes de carbone et qui risque d'entra\u00eener l'extinction d'esp\u00e8ces.<\/p>\r\n

L'industrie foresti\u00e8re a souvent port\u00e9 pr\u00e9judice aux communaut\u00e9s d\u00e9pendantes de la for\u00eat. Pourtant, elle est \"largement\u00a0reconnu<\/a>\u00a0que les for\u00eats sous le contr\u00f4le des peuples autochtones et d'autres communaut\u00e9s locales\" - ce qui est d\u00e9sormais l\u00e9galement possible en RDC - produisent des \"r\u00e9sultats environnementaux, sociaux et \u00e9conomiques positifs\".<\/p>\r\n

Les scientifiques avertissent le gouvernement de la RDC et ses partenaires internationaux que toute expansion de l'exploitation foresti\u00e8re industrielle dans le pays serait incompatible avec leurs programmes de protection des for\u00eats. Il conviendrait plut\u00f4t de soutenir des mesures alternatives telles que la foresterie communautaire et des contr\u00f4les plus stricts sur les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s d'exploitation foresti\u00e8re.<\/p>\r\n

La lettre des scientifiques a \u00e9t\u00e9 envoy\u00e9e aux donateurs en m\u00eame temps qu'un formulaire de demande d'aide.\u00a0p\u00e9tition sign\u00e9e par pr\u00e8s de 100 000 personnes<\/a>\u00a0en RDC et dans le monde entier, avec le soutien de\u00a0Greenpeace Afrique<\/a>,\u00a0Rainforest Foundation UK<\/a>\u00a0et\u00a0Sauvetage de la for\u00eat tropicale<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n
