Today we are launching an urgent appeal for the Indigenous\u00a0Ash\u00e1ninka\u00a0and other local communities of the\u00a0Ene\u00a0River, which burst its banks\u00a0over the weekend\u00a0following unprecedented rains, leaving hundreds of families in desperate need of food,\u00a0water\u00a0and shelter.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Flooding\n\t

Satellite\u00a0analysis shows that\u00a0more\u00a05,000 hectares has been flooded,\u00a0leaving\u00a0around\u00a0300\u00a0families\u00a0reeling in the aftermath;\u00a0they’ve\u00a0lost everything they worked so hard to build – their homes, their belongings, their livelihoods.\u00a0The floods\u00a0have\u00a0decimated the very crops these families rely on. Hundreds of hectares of cocoa, painstakingly nurtured as part of our project, are now ruined. The trees will begin to\u00a0rot\u00a0and the fruit will spoil. Yucca and banana crops, which are often the only source of food for these families, have suffered a similar fate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Map\n\t

The\u00a0Ash\u00e1ninka\u00a0people, resilient as they are, now find themselves without the most\u00a0basic necessities\u00a0of life\u00a0–\u00a0water, food, and blankets. Thanks to a swift operation coordinated by our partner CARE\u00a0and the military,\u00a0many were\u00a0rescued\u00a0and some supplies are getting in\u00a0by military helicopter. Yet,\u00a0it’s\u00a0not enough.\u202fThe most urgent need is to\u00a0provide\u00a0food and\u00a0drink\u00a0as quickly as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just \u00a38 will provide a family with the water they desperately need.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a329 will purchase blankets for a family, keeping them warm and safe from illness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a350 will buy mattresses for a family who have been left with nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Such extreme weather events are made\u00a0much\u00a0more likely by global warming and typically have greatest impact on those least responsible for the climate crisis such as riverine communities. In recent weeks, the Congo River burst its banks following the worst\u00a0floods\u00a0there in\u00a0more than 60 years,\u00a0killing hundreds of people and displacing\u00a0thousands,\u00a0including\u00a0in\u00a0community forests that RFUK and our partners’ support. Local governments and the international development community\u00a0are grossly\u00a0ill-prepared to respond to such crises despite the\u00a0establishment of a Loss and\u00a0Damage\u00a0Fund\u00a0at COP28\u00a0to aid developing countries vulnerable to climate change impacts\u00a0to\u00a0respond to economic and non-economic loss and damage.<\/p>\n
